However, I was thinking about this the other day in relation to the ever-changing Raleigh restaurant/bar scene and how some places that are good (in my opinion, at least) and seem popular don't seem to make it, yet some other places soldier on.
Then there is the aspect of those places that have a great reputation, but you have personally never been to (or maybe you've only been once or twice).
So this is essentially a two-pronged question: What are those places that you can't believe are still open? And what are those places that you just must believe are pretty good because they've been around for forever, even if you've never been?
For me, one that comes to mind is Tasca Brava on Glenwood South. I don't think I've ever met anyone who has actually eaten there, but it must be pretty good. (It just has never worked out that I can go there, or we just don't think about it.)
I'll also throw The Mint, La Volta and Spize (all on Fayetteville Street) into the mix as well. Never been to any of them for dinner, and none of them ever seem that busy, but they must be good ... right?
One place's success that I'll never quite understand: Vic's in City Market. Can someone explain it to me?

Looks like a normal night at The Mint to me.

You need to go to Spize because lunch is fresh and delicious. The food and atmosphere at Tasca Brava are fine, but the service is terrible...like so bad that I almost had to run my own credit card.
I have eaten at Vic's before ... their pizza is great. You should make time to visit them. Won't be disappointed :O)
Well, I've been to Vic's twice and both experiences were downright horrible, both because of the quality of food and because of the quality of the service. Granted, the last time was about 4 years ago, so maybe it's improved.
Went to Tasca Brava once and thought it was great. I don't think they have many people that work there and I wonder if one of the waiters was also working in the kitchen. Food though was fantastic. I'll make it back one of these days.
Here are 3 that I have found disappointing and I think this is going to floor a lot of people.
Zely & Ritz - ordered the chicken and I got a plate with one piece of flavorless grilled chicken. No seasoning. No sides. Just a hunk of chicken. Thanks.
Poole's Diner - I want to like it but sorry. Multiple trips and I haven't had a good meal yet.
Casa Carbone - salad was the white middle part of the lettuce and the chicken parmigiana was a piece of breaded chuckwagon with Food Lion brand tomato sauce. No thanks.
I've only eaten at Hayes Barton once and can't remember anything about it. Need to go again and I know everyone loves it. Heron's would be one on the high-end of the scale (Do they philosophize in Caryville?) You know what? I've never been to Snoopy's either!
I have had Snoopy's hot dogs three times, and I have thrown up three times. I don't think it's me.
Their chicken salad sandwiches are OK. Didn't throw up.
TSnow, you know it's basically Raleigh heresy to badmouth Poole's, right? ;)
I've had great experiences at Snoopy's; sorry to hear it's been, uh, and unfortunate time, KBrew. Yikes.
