What, pray tell, is 'The Wood Pile?'

I was looking up directions to somewhere the other day when I noticed on Google's map of Raleigh -- almost smack-dab in the middle of the city -- a featured location dubbed, "The Wood Pile." I had never heard of a neighborhood or a part of Raleigh called that.

A quick search shows that maybe it's an apartment complex? But The Wood Pile also boasts its own list of events on this "neighborhood" page. However, this link shows that it could be a development company downtown.

What gives? Who knows what's up?

Good question! Fascinating stuff. Wonder if any of those history buffs at the Raleigh City Museum has a clue?

Rob, I posed the same question on Facebook and got this response ...

That was Gordon Smith's dream project. He bought the entire block between S. East, S. Bloodworth, E. Hargett & E. Martin. He moved all the old houses off of it (and demolished a few of them). And then he ran out of money, so the block sits empty.

Davd, Yep, that area is known as Hungry Neck North (though I've yet to find a South). I believe there is even a sidewalk marker somewhere along Edenton St. that talks about HNN.
